Often associated with riverbanks, ditches and wetlands, the water vole is one of Britain's most recognisable native mammals. These semi-aquatic rodents are excellent swimmers and spend much of their time among waterside vegetation, where they feed on grasses and other plants. They're also famously the inspiration behind Ratty in The Wind in the Willows, despite Ratty actually being a water vole rather than a rat.
