Water rails are elusive wetland birds found around reedbeds, marshes and densely vegetated waterways across the UK. Their chestnut-brown backs, blue-grey faces and underparts, black-and-white barred flanks and long reddish bills make them distinctive birds when you manage to catch a glimpse. They're more often heard than seen, producing a range of squeals, grunts and pig-like calls from deep within the vegetation.
