Despite the name, magpie geese aren't true geese or magpies. They're a distinctive waterbird native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea, recognised by their black-and-white plumage, knobbly head and long legs. Unlike many waterfowl, they have partially webbed feet and are often seen feeding in wetlands and grassy floodplains.
